Data analyst – Functional Bioinformatics

http://www.cnag.cat/works/

The FBI investigates functional aspects of expressed genes, as by their mutual interaction and regulation, to advance in the understanding how the information encoded in a single genome can give rise to a plethora of different cell types that together form an organism. To achieve these goals we employ results of high-throughput sequencing applied to the transcriptome (RNA-Seq) and from Chip-Seq assays.

Responsibilities: Analyzing sequencing data from such projects or from other collaborations in order to advance in our understanding about functionality of genomic as transcribed elements. The candidate will primarily apply established pipelines to datasets (RNA-Seq and Chip-Seq). Furthermore, depending on candidate’s profile and availability, the FBI offers the possibility to participate in the implementation of computational approaches of the group, e.g. the Flux Capacitor/Simulator, and Astalavista.

Candidate profile: Post-doctorate research fellow or a technician with a PhD/Master’s Degree in Biology, Bioinformatics, or related fields. The CNAG operates a powerful computational cluster (currently >100 nodes, each 8 cores) based on a Unix platform; therefore, a profound knowledge of common Unix commands is an essential pre-requirement for the candidate to be eligible. Candidates are expected to possess a background that provided them with a general knowledge about the biological concepts of gene expression. The successful candidate will employ statistical frameworks (e.g., the “R” platform) and scripting (e.g., bash, awk, perl, python, or similar) to pursue comparisons of experimental data. The FBI already developed pipelines for the low-level data processing, and we support candidates who are interested in extending and improving these computational tools implemented in Java and Groovy. In addition to these technical skills, we especially encourage candidates with preliminary experiences in genomics, transcriptomics, or the analysis of high-throughput sequencing data to apply.

Conditions: Position to be filled by the 3rd quartal 2012 for the duration of 2 years. Salary according to academical degree and experience of the candidate.
